Debian

Debian is a well know Linux distribution, it provides a full featured Linux distribution. This is not the smallest, but is somehow lighweight for a fully featured distribution. The minimum size is around 50 MBytes, which is enormous for an NOR flash, but very small compared to the currently available SD or Compact flash card capacity.

This distribution provides binary packages for the ARM architecture.

Setup (see DebianQuickStart)

Debian has got a realy good documentation for installation, but the ARMEBS3 is not a full featured desktop PC. It has some limitation and the normal install using a bootable CDROM or DVD is not the standard way on this machine.

Audio playback

  • Tested using a standard USB to audio converter and mplayer.
  • mp3 playback < 35 % cpu
    • mplayer -ac mad file.mp3 (worked with etch and no more with lenny...)
    • libmad (fixed point implementation)
    • tested up to 320 kbps
  • ogg vorbis playback < 90 % cpu
    • mplayer -ac vorbis file.ogg
    • using libvorbis (fixed point implementation)
    • tested quality -1 to 9
  • flac (lossless compression) < 20 % cpu
    • tested quality 0 to 8
